Did anyone else forget about the solar eclipse last night?
I had gone up to our local overlook for an hour of quiet thinking and to shoot the sunset, but when I got up there, there was already quite a few people, some with tripods and long lenses, others with cell phones and little point & shoots.
Everyone was in jolly moods and the feel in the air was quite a festive one.
I don't know if the feeling came from the close of a beautiful weekend, or from the local festival that our town had put on that afternoon.
There had been a beer garden.
But whatever the reason, folks were lining up on the wall that surrounded the overlook
and the parking spaces were filling up rapidly.
I have to admit, I was rather irked that the peaceful solitude I was looking for was being over run with
noisy kids and loud onlookers that seemed to know more than they really did.
And I still didn't know why there were so many people at "my" spot.
So naturally, I started to eavesdrop.
It was only then that I learned about the eclipse about to take place.
Guess that explained the welder's mask that was making the rounds amongst everyone gathered.
Truthfully, I wasn't really in the mood for an eclipse, for some reason they just don't invoke the "ooh's" and "aww's" that they do in other people.
I just wanted the sunset that I had come for.
But I guess an occasional eclipse doesn't ruin the shot, either.
Dance then, wherever you may be I am the Lord of the Dance, said He! And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be And I'll lead you all in the Dance, said He! (...lead you all in the Dance, said He!)
Morning has broken, like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning
Praise for the springing fresh from the word.
Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven
Like the first dewfall, on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where his feet pass
Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning
Born of the one light, Eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise every morning
God's recreation of the new day.
I treated myself to a vacation of sorts today.
I swung on the porch swing and read till my legs got rosy from the sun.
I took photos of my morning doings---
bills paid and stamped, squirrels in the sunflower garden, Langley wallowing in the sunny backyard.
The emotions have hit hard these past couple days, and I realized that I've been forcing myself to have fun,
to get out of the house and away from my head.
Things that started out being great fun, have taken on more and more of a forced sort of fun.
It doesn't help that David has been in Africa for the past couple weeks.
I needed today to re-start my noticing the simple things in life again,
the things that have always fueled me.
I needed to step away from my "have-to's" , the "should's", the computer and all the distractions it holds
---and it holds a lot of distractions---
and just breathe in the sunlight, the blue sky, the bird song, the warmth.
The world is magical when I stop to look again.
